Lithium batteries: What makes for a safe installation onboard?

In this video, Ryan takes a deep (geeky) dive into lithium battery installation standards. In particular, he looks at the ABYC standards for the installation of lithium battery house banks on boats. With many boat insurances often refusing to cover boats with lithium batteries on board these days, it’s important we all understand how to install them safely.

The standards Ryan discusses in the video apply to the lithium battery system, not the single batteries themselves. This is because the standards for the batteries themselves are set by their manufacturers. Disclaimer: proper ventilation is essential.

It’s also important to set up a battery management system - internally or externally - which allows you to cut off charging and discharging current to the battery if a high or low voltage voltage event occurs, or if the battery reaches too high or too low of a temperature.
