Sailing 500 Nautical Miles in the CRAZIEST fog
Welcome to this week’s episode. As you may remember, we’re making our way from Annapolis to Nova Scotia…
After a quick stop in New York Harbor, we set off on our fourth attempt to reach Canada (yes, we’ve been trying to get there since 2020!). After finding our way through a million lobster pots near Martha’s Vineyard Sound, we encounter a thick layer of fog. We thought it would disappear as soon as we hit the open water, but it stuck with us until we reached our destination. Oh did I mention there is no wind whatsoever the whole way - 500 nautical miles? Yay. Thankfully we sound insulated our engine a few months ago.
As we exit the Nantucket Sound, the fog intensifies to the point that we have less than a quarter mile visibility around us! Yet the next day, as we motor past Cape Cod, the fog somehow manages to get even thicker. We’re so glad we had a modern radar made by Raymarine on board during this passage. There were so many fishing boats without AIS around us, constantly changing heading. The radar allowed us to see where the boats were and track them as if they were on AIS. Thank you, trusty Quantum 2!
But it’s not all bad - we get to see some dolphins play with the waves towards the end of the trip.
As we enter Nova Scotia and raise our courtesy flag, we realise it’s July 1st - Canada Day!
After checking into the country, as we get ready to jump in the dinghy, the fog starts lifting and we finally get to see the colourful buildings of Lunenburg, which looks so pretty. To celebrate our achievement we go to shore for a well-deserved beer. The eeeeend!
The most fun moment of this trip? Trying to find Polar Seal in the fog after our celebrations. Sigh.
